September 2008

In This Issue

Dear Members & Friends of the Guild:

Hello!

This weekend was a very exciting one as I sat in on our first ever AGEHR Music Educator Training Seminar! It truly was a wonderful honor to be there as these ‘METS’ all-stars worked together. They participated in discussion, hands-on activities and group projects to find better ways to bridge the gap between the austere arena of National Standards and the developmental, educational and musical benefits of the handbell and handchime world.  Each of these educators is dedicated to excellence in education, as well as handbells. I think it is safe to say that this weekend’s Music Educators Training Seminar was nothing less than an amazing first step in our commitment to supporting our ever-developing roster of music educators.

Discovering Our New Website!

Forums!...

The AGEHR website has a newly developing forum for you to explore. Visit these message boards and become a founding member of our on-line voice! One of the many things that make these forums unique is that they give you the opportunity to get the official AGEHR viewpoint on some topics, find answers to your questions about the world of handbells, and interact with the experts in our field. You will also get to hear from many of AGEHR's past officers who represent a wealth of handbell knowledge.

Each month a past officer will step forward to start a conversation with you. This developing part of our website promises to be a fun and informative way for us all to stay connected.

Anyone can read the forums. However, to post you will need your Member Number and Website Password.

Please welcome this month's
Forums host

Janet Van Valey

Janet has been an active member of AGEHR for 27 years.  When she first joined, she says that she knew very little about handbells, but as an experienced public school music teacher and a church musician she saw the guild as an opportunity for her to learn a new instrument and grow as a teacher.  Over the years she served as the National Secretary for 4 years, on numerous committees and is now the Chair-Elect of Area V.

Janet has posted under several of our Forum headings including the Music Educators General Discussion Forum

“Handchimes are very popular in general music education, but finding time to have another rehearsal is often a major challenge. . . .” Click here to read this post!

Beautiful Music that Gives...

We all know how talented our AGEHR composers are, but maybe you do not realize how truly generous these composers are in supporting AGEHR. Each year many composers choose to donate a portion of their AGEHR royalties back to the Guild to support our organization! So when you choose AGEHR music for your programs not only does it provide a beautiful musical experience for your ringers and audiences, it supports the AGEHR mission through these very special composer gifts to the Guild!

If you would like to do more to help support the AGEHR mission, consider donating $5 or more to the Guild today. Donate Now!

Where's My Overtones?

Usually at this time most people will have received their new issue of Overtones, and a few are still anxiously awaiting its arrival. But the September/October issue will be delayed for a while yet.

As some of you who attended International Symposium and National Seminar are aware, our editor’s laptop was stolen from the hotel. Connected to the laptop, unfortunately, was the hard drive which contains Overtones and a number of other works in progress, all of which need to be recreated from scratch.

We are working hard to get this accomplished and will have a new issue to you as soon as possible.

Members Only Resources:

Community/Professional Group Resources

From “Fundraising for Community Groups: Now and Later” by Sherry Graham

I doubt that anyone ever founded or joined a community handbell ensemble in order to be able to spend more time having bake sales and car washes and attempting to sell candy bars or gift-wrap to friends and acquaintances. We’re in this group so we can play! So, ideally, we fund our efforts by playing. We charge performance fees and sell tickets. We make recordings, and sell those. In this ideal situation, the money we make by playing meets and even exceeds our expenses. Hooray! We’re doing what we love, and the money rolls in! We can buy more bells, buy more costumes, buy more bells, buy prettier table covers, buy more bells, replace those ratty-looking mallets, buy more bells, and perhaps even buy a truck to haul them all around in!  However...
