AGEHR Names Jason Wells Music Director of Distinctly Bronze
Having directed the event since its inception in 1998, David approached executive director Jennifer Cauhorn last spring about beginning to consider a potential replacement. His first choice was Jason Wells. David expressed the need and desire to find someone who would bring youth and energy to the event yet still uphold the musical integrity it has achieved. In 1997 Jason founded the premier handbell ensemble Ring of Fire in Hillsboro, Oregon, a group that has performed in 28 states, seven countries, and on national television and radio. The more than 40 musicians who have been part of the ensemble are well known for their energetic and compelling performances. Some of the ensemble’s highlights have been performing at NBA basketball games, two presidential inaugurations, Lincoln Center in New York City, and with the Boston Pops on three occasions in Symphony Hall. As an undergraduate in the early 1990’s, Jason played trumpet for 3 years with the New England Youth Ensemble, performing in 26 countries and five times in Carnegie Hall under the direction of choral great John Rutter. In 2008 he teamed up with colleague Tim Waugh to lead Distinctly Teen in Orlando, Florida, an event for advanced youth ringers. He continues to be in high demand as a clinician at handbell festivals and workshops both nationally and internationally. Jason shared that he was humbled to be selected by David for this position and has pledged to honor David’s legacy. “Through David’s vision and leadership, the art of handbells has risen to new heights. He will continue to be an inspiration to us all,” said Jason. AGEHR has the utmost confidence in Jason’s ability to meet and exceed that challenge ahead and is excited about the dynamic he will bring to the Distinctly Bronze podium
